2019 marks the 20th Anniversary of the Establishment of the Macao SAR as well as the 20th anniversary of the founding of the Macao Museum of Art (MAM). On this special occasion, MAM will host three exhibitions - part of the series of activities of Art Macao, a mega-event inviting exhibition-goers to experience the charm of traditional Chinese culture and multiculturalism through the introduction of art collections.

The ‘Italian Renaissance Drawings from the British Museum’ exhibition, held from 12th April to 30th June, comprises 52 drawings by 42 masters, including Mantegna, Correggio, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Titian, Raphael, and Rosso Fiorentino. Meanwhile, MAM and the National Art Museum of China have co-organised ‘Beauty in the New Era: Masterpieces from the Collection of the National Art Museum of China’ from 4th May to 28th July, offering a comprehensive overview of the development of contemporary Chinese fine art through the contemporary masterpieces of Qi Baishi, Fu Baoshi and Li Keran, among others. In the second half of 2019, MAM plans to present paintings by Chen Zhifo, a famous 20th century Chinese fine brushworks painter of birds and flowers and a renowned pioneer of Chinese arts and crafts.

In response to the national initiative of encouraging cultural exchanges between countries and regions along the Belt and Road and the development of Macao as a major hub of the Maritime Silk Road, MAM will work with the Palace Museum again to jointly hold a large-scale exhibition of cultural relics.

Established on 19th March 1999, MAM currently offers the largest exhibition space for visual arts in Macao. The Museum currently houses more than 16000 pieces, has hosted more than 450 exhibitions and has published some 260 exhibition albums, thesis collections and educational pamphlets. On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of its founding MAM will also publish ‘Selected Works from Collections of the Macao Museum of Art’ and launch thematic souvenirs to celebrate this important milestone.
