Last month, Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) delivered the report of the ‘Analytical Study on Optimisation of Nighttime Tourism Activities and Products,’ which advocates short-term measures as well as proposed times for activity, venues and activity types. A range of suggestions include creating new possibilities for tourism development through suitable urban planning.

MGTO commissioned a research institute to conduct the study in the fourth quarter of 2018, which focused on 21 nighttime tourism activities organised by MGTO and other governmental entities and organisations for further examination and analysis of their current status.

Through research methods such as literature reviews, field research and in-depth interviews, the multidimensional analysis was conducted upon the target activities, especially regarding type and category, when held and on-site situation, among other factors. As well as examining the status of current nighttime activities in Macao, the research team selected nighttime activities in Singapore, Sydney, Tokyo, Hong Kong and Taipei for case analysis and comparison.

Through analysis and overview of current nighttime tourism activities in Macao, the study highlights a series of current issues as constraints against nighttime activities; namely, limited land area, high population density, noise regulations, inadequate venues, lack of supporting facilities for outdoor activities, lack of suitable new outdoor venues and insufficient capitalisation of maritime and waterfront areas, among other issues.

The research team determined, however, that Macao does not lack a diversity of regular nighttime tourism resources and nighttime events. For example, MGTO alone already organises a range of such activities,  such as the Parade for Celebration of Chinese New Year, Macao International Fireworks Display Contest, Macao Light Festival, and more.

Thus, the study proposes an array of short-term measures to optimise current nighttime tourism activities and products, such as utilising current resources to ramp up competitive strengths, effectively connecting and integrating activities of a similar nature and time periods as well as in close proximity, optimising venue conditions and enhancing promotional efforts for regular nighttime activities, among other measures.
