Two resorts act to cut some 23 million plastic bottles annually from waste with in-house water bottling

Integrated resort operators Wynn Macau Ltd and Melco Resorts and Entertainment Ltd hope to keep an aggregate of 22.8 million single-use plastic water bottles out of waste streams each year, following the rollout of in-house water purifying systems.

Both organisations have installed the Nordaq 2000 Refilling System to produce filtered and sparkling water. The system fills 2,000 reusable glass water bottles an hour. The water produced is said to be a premium product that is environmentally friendly.

The Wynn Macau and Wynn Palace properties began using Nordaq manual water systems in their food and beverage operations in 2019. The group plans to further expand the use of Nordaq technology this year – including for water bottle distribution to its 2,700 guestrooms – to save about 8 million plastic bottles from entering the waste stream each year.

Melco Resorts and Entertainment says that by implementing the system at its hotels at City of Dreams, Studio City and Altira Macau it can conserve 14.8 million plastic bottles annually. Currently, Morpheus at City of Dreams already has access to the system.

Both organisations are committed to improving the sustainability of their operations. Wynn’s ‘Care about Everyone and Everything’ and Melco’s ‘Above & Beyond’ strategy are corporate-level programmes dedicated to corporate social responsibility and sustainability.
