Macau Welcomes 500,000th Korean Tourist

On 26th November, Macau Government Tourist Office welcomed a group of Korean tourists that put a five-person media group and a number of visitors from the Peninsula over the 500,000 Korean visitor mark. The achievement made Korea the first international market for Macau, after Greater China, to surpass the half million milestone in terms of number of visitor arrivals.

MGTO director Ms. Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes said that the prospects for the development of the Korean market were excellent and that the Office would continue to strengthen the tourism promotion of Macau to attract more international tourists to Macau.

In recent years, MGTO has organised large-scale tourism fairs, various tourism promotion activities, and hosted Korean tourism and media. Korean TV has come to Macau to produce television game shows, entertainment and TV dramas. In order to increase the momentum of Koreans visiting Macau, MGTO organized a series of promotional activities for local consumers and the tourism industry earlier this year in Seoul and Busan.

There was a double-digit increase in Korean tourists visiting Macau from 2010-2012, with more than 450,000 visitors last year, up 6.6 percent over the previous year. In the first ten months of this year, Macau welcomed more than 460,000 visitors, an increase of 19% compared to the same period last year. Korea is the largest international source market for Macau, ranking fourth after China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Round-trip airline flights to and from Macau and Korea are currently increasing, with Air Macau, Jin Air and Air Busan Airways providing 24 flights per week.
