19th Lusofonia Festival Salutes Portuguese-speaking Countries’ Culture

The 19 th Lusofonia Festival organized by the Cultural Affairs Bureau and co-hosted by Macao Government Tourism Office and the Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau, will be held on the lakeside promenade of The Taipa Houses-Museum this month in a spectacular smorgasbord of activities saluting the culture of Portuguese-speaking countries from around the world.

The Festival - originally running on Friday 21 st October (7:00pm to 10:00pm), Saturday 22nd October (12:00pm to 11:00pm) and Sunday 23rd October (12:00pm to 10:00pm) will be postponed to 28th - 30th October due to the adverse weather conditions in order to ensure the safety of the participants. The event will include music and dance performances by local and Portuguese bands, gourmet treats, Macau Grand Prix simulator, traditional Portuguese games, Portuguese music broadcast by Carmo Radio, and much more.

Every night from 7:30pm to 9:30pm, a small stage set up in front of Our Lady of Carmel Church will host a local band playing light music. Ten Portuguese-speaking communities will showcase the cultural and gastronomic delights of Macao, Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Goa Daman and Diu, Mozambique, Portugal, São Tomé and Principe, and East Timor, while booths will feature music, photo-taking, handicrafts, costumes, literatures, local snacks and drinks from different Portuguese-speaking communities, in order to enable visitors to better understand the culture of Portuguese-speaking countries and regions.

The first Lusofonia Festival was held in 1998 on Portugal Day (10 th June) in acknowledgement of the Portuguese-speaking community residing in Macao.
