The recent 10th edition of the Green Macau Hotel Awards has recognised 27 hotels, the highest number of winning hotels since 2007. Some 11 winning hotels were first time participants, seven hotels won the highest accolade of the Golden Award, while two budget hotels won the newly added Certificate of Basic Measures. The Environmental Protection Bureau (DSPA) will organise a celebratory ceremony for the new edition of award-winning hotels in June.

Since the launch of the Green Macau Hotel Awards in 2007, the number of prize-winning hotels has increased from eight to 47, growing close to sixfold in the past ten years, to represent 40 per cent of the hotel rooms. The number of rewarded hotel rooms has grown from 1,500 in 2007 to over 22,000 rooms, expanding by around 15 times, to representing 60 per cent of the hotel rooms available in Macao.

In addition, these hotels have achieved significant success in a number of areas, including waste reduction and energy conservation, reducing kitchen waste, noise and pollution control, and controlling pollution from transportation and light. They also work with local government on environmental promotion policies and related issues in order to meet the requirements of society for environmental protection.

All award-winning hotels actively take measures to reduce food waste: in addition, all green hotels have implemented environmental management projects for waste reduction, with many large hotels having already installed food recyclers or plan to do so soon. Hotel workers are also trained to reduce kitchen waste, reducing or recycling waste materials from source, fulfilling corporate social responsibility obligations.
