The '2018 Black Pearl Restaurant Guide' - which held a press conference in The Parisian Macao on 14th June - lists 330 restaurants in the Guide this year, of which 28 have been awarded three diamonds, and described by the Guide as 'must visit once in a lifetime'; 85 were awarded two diamonds - 'perfect for special occasions' - while 217 were given one diamond - 'great for family/friends gathering'. A total of 13 Macao restaurants were listed in the Guide, including two restaurants awarded three diamonds, four receiving two diamonds, and seven given one diamond.

The '2018 Black Pearl Restaurant Guide' is the first food guide to address and incorporate a Chinese gourmet perspective. With the stated objective of offering the best dining experiences for Chinese consumers, all awarded restaurants are selected from a uniquely Chinese perspective.

The selection committee of the Guide comprises gourmands, culinary experts, gastronomists, and cultural intermediaries. The 330 restaurants are located in 22 cities in China, with five cities selected from abroad. In order to meet the taste expectations of Chinese foodies the selection process is based upon three elements borrowed from traditional Chinese gastronomy - namely, culinary skills, service level, creativity and inheritance.

To ensure impartiality of selection the Guide also invited gastronomists, veteran users of Meituan-Dianping, a famous Chinese group buying website, as members of the selection committee, and visited all nominated restaurants anonymously. PricewaterhouseCoopers has been invited to apply agreed procedures on selection criteria.
